Carved out by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is one of the deepest (max. 1,800 m) and most spectacular gorges in the world. Even or especially from a satellite perspective, the Grand Canyon National Park offers fascinating images. In 1979, the Grand Canyon was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Located in the state of Arizona, USA, it cuts through a thick layer of limestone, shale and sandstone across the Grand Canyon National Park. Its horizontal strata retrace the geological history of the past 2 billion years. The length of the canyon is 446 km while its width (at the plateau level) varies from 6 to 29 km and at the bottom it is less than a kilometre.
