Agricultural area north of Mariscal Estigarribia, Departamento Boquerón, Paraguay – an example of man-made structures influencing noticeably the external appearance of the landscape.

In Boquerón, the terrain slowly rises from the Río Paraguay lowlands westwards up to 450 metres in altitude – it is the foothills of the Andes. The most important economic sectors are agriculture and livestock breeding. The main crops are sesame, peanuts and, to a lesser extent, soya. Due to the rising world market prices for meat, livestock breeding has been greatly increased in recent years.
