The image shows an ice floe in Jokel Bay and its impressive surface structure. It is located offshore of King Frederick VIII Land, north-east of Greenland. To the north is Lamberts Land, to the west the Zachariae Isstrøm flows into the bay. To the east the Achton Friis Islands & Schnauder Island seal the bay off and hamper the ice floe from moving further east.
Presumably this ice floe is pack ice that was pressed by the glacier tongue from one side while it was blocked from the opposite islands. After most of Jokel Bay became ice-free in the summer, the ice floe in the north-eastern part of the bay has only slightly melted and has been affected by waves in the bay. This could perhaps explain the structure of its surface.
