ABOUT MAPP

The MERIS Application and Regional Products Projects (MAPP) is a joint effort of the Institute for Coastal Research of the GKSS Research Centre, the Institutes for Optoelectronics and Planetary Research of the DLR, the Institute for Space Sciences of the Free University Berlin, and Brockmann Consult. It is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

Aims

Based on the standard Envisat MERIS products supplied by ESA, the MAPP collaboration aims at providing the German Earth observation and climate research community with additional, region-specific, and higher-level science products and services.
In particular, the following elements are defined:

1. The development of new algorithms to obtain additional or refined science products
2. The development of processing software to generate MAPP data products from ESA standard products in an automated way
3. The definition, production, validation, and distribution of additional and higher-level regional science products
4. The maintenance of technical documentation and user manuals
5. User training and support

The MAPP data products are generally termed MERIS value-added (MERIS-VA) products. The scientific algorithms are developed and validated by the research partners GKSS, FUB and DLR.
The development and maintenance of the MERIS-VA processing software is the primary responsibility of Brockmann Consult. The processor is integrated into the German Remote Sensing Data Centre, DFD, of DLR in Neustrelitz.

Regional Coverage

The MERIS-VA products cover total Europe on the full-resolution 300 x 300 m grid.
Regional products for the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Lake Constance are also available.
