Activities

Activities are taking place in several interoperating subprojects (TP) and working packages (AP). Subprojects are defined for considering the North Sea (TP 1), the Baltic Sea (TP 2), inland waters (TP 3), land surface (TP 4), atmosphere (TP 5), and the MERIS-VA software (TP 6).

The essential aim of MAPP is the operational production of enhanced geophysical data for the purpose of climate and environmental research as well as environmental monitoring and management. In order to assure the usability of MAPP data products, forthcoming users are involved in the development of data products from the beginning. Selected users are provided with preliminary products to test their applicability and, if necessary, the next generation products are refined according to the user's reports. For each subproject suitable partners have been selected to prepare specific application concepts. These concepts will be tested in form of demonstration projects.

TP 1. North Sea

Activities in TP 1 are currently focused on the validation of the atmospheric correction and the resulting water constituent products. Further efforts are the production of times series using the MERIS-VA software and their representation in form of thematic maps. Demonstration projects will be realized in cooperation with the Landesamt für Natur und Umwelt of Schleswig-Holstein.

TP 2. Baltic Sea
In preparation.

TP 3. Inland waters
In preparation.

TP 4. Land surface

Within the MERIS Applications and Regional Products Project (MAPP), two land products are developed:
  • an operational algorithm for generating a land cover / land use map of Germany, based on multi-temporal MERIS full resolution data. The proposed algorithm is composed of a multi-spectral maximum-likelihood classification and a multi-temporal analysis. By building a multi-spectral database and multi-temporal reference vectors, the classification can be updated automatically every year.
  • an Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) compatible vegetation index called "AVHRR compatible NDVI" which based on radiative transfer models for simulating the reflectance of the broad spectral channels of the NOAA - AVHRR and the narrow spectral bands of MERIS. Linear combinations of the MERIS reflectances in the red and near-infrared describe the AVHRR reflectance in channel 1 and 2. The model takes into account
    • atmospheric effects by using the Simplified Method for Atmospheric Correction (SMAC),
    • canopy and soil reflectance and transmission using the Scattering of Arbitrarily Inclined Leaf (SAIL) model and
    • leaf reflectance and transmittance using the Stochastic model for Leaf Optical Properties Extended for fluorescence (SLOPE).
For further information please visist the WDC NDVI site.

TP 5. Atmosphere
Similar to TP 1, activities in TP 5 are focused on the validation of data products. In particular aerosol and cloud products are validated with concurrent airborne measurements using a sun photometer developed by the Institute for Space Sciences of the FU Berlin, the Portable Lidar System (POLIS) and the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI). Demonstration projects in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology have been started.

TP 6. MERIS-VA software
In TP 6 most attention is currently given on the completion of the operational Level 2 processing software with plugins for water constituents, cloud, and water vapour products. Further activities are the adaption of the Level 3 processor to updated Level 2 products and modifications of the Data Management and Information System of the DLR, and the running of user workshops and courses.
