BALF is a small, low-cost and rugged multispectral fluorometer designed for the application in intertidal flats. BALF has been developed and designed by NIOO CEME. The BALF consists of a measuring head which contains the different LEDs which provide the excitation wavelengths and two light sensors. Measurement of intertidal benthic algal biomass can be carried out in several ways. The advantage of the fluorometric method is that it is a proxy for the photosynthetically active biomass, an important parameter in the ecology of the estuarine foodwebs.
