I try to install BEAM on my new laptop, OS is kubuntu 13.04.
I get the error message below.
Please explain how to proceed.

I tried to install ia32-libs, but this package was not found.
However I got the suggestion to install ia32-libs-multiarch.
Which I did, but the error message installing BEAM remained the same.
Is there something else I could try?

Here (http://yed.yworks.com/support/qa/18/linux-installer-aborts-complaining-about-bitness-jvm-what) I found the suggestion to install Java from Oracle first.

I removed the open source java and installed the java from Oracle.
Unfortunately, it did not help, still getting the same error message.
Do you have other suggestions to solve or debug the problem?

Is it possible that I use the wrong unpack200 program?

HI Gerard,

you are trying to install the 64bit version of BEAM. Do you have a 64 bit operating version ?
What's the output of "uname -m" ?

If you already have Java installed you also could used the unix installer. It does not bring it's own JRE but uses the system JRE.

Hi Gerard,

this means you have a 32bit operating system.

"i386", "i486", "i586" and "i686" and "athlon" all mean 32 bit.
"x86_64" means 64 bit (Opteron or Athlon-64). "i686-64" means 32-bit
operation with 64-bit address space (Intel 686 with the new memory
mechanism).

32bit or 64bit

Hello Gerard,

Because Java needs an upper limit the BEAM installer tries
to find a good value for how much memory to use.
We normally use 50% of the available memory and 1300 MB on 32 bit systems.

But the decision if this an 32 bit system ha not worked properly with your generic unix installer.
To fix this you can manually change this limit in the *.sh files and the visat.vmoptions file inside
the "bin" directory of your BEAM installation.

I changed -Xmx2939M in -Xmx1300m in the files visat.vmoptions and visat-d.sh.
Visat still does not work, but calling visat-d.sh does something,
i.e. after some error messages a GUI is launched.

Can you clarify the difference between M in 2939M and m in 1300m?
Do I have to change all sh files in /usr/local/beam-4.11/bin ?

can you please post what error messages are shown if your start visat-d.sh.
Is there any message if you start visat directly? If so, would be good to post this too.

There is no difference between 'M' and 'm'. Both are a abbreviation for megabyte.
You only need to change the sh files if you use them. if you never invoke the meris-cloud.sh then you don't need to change it.

It looks like that the visat-d.sh works now as it should.
The reason that the visat executable still fails seems to be that you haven't updated the visat.vmoptions file yet.
Could you please double check this?
