RE: NetCDF char variable issue
NetCDF char variable issue
9/1/11 10:18 AM

When opening a NetCDF file (both classic and NetCDF-4 formats) in BEAM 4.9, only the attributes are viewable for the char type variables and not the actual variable data; is this a bug in the NetCDF reader?

The NCDUMP CDL output confirms the file contains data within the char variables, however BEAM does not seem to be able to read/display them.

Many thanks for your help,

That's correct. It is a current limitation, that the BEAM netCDF reader does not handle char variables. The purpose of the reader is to read 2D image data. But how can character data be displayed as an image?

Hi Ralf,

Thanks for the quick feedback.

Perhaps BEAM could have an exception and concatenate the char variable into a 1 dimensional string variable; the information could then be viewed as with the other 1d arrays and not as an image? This exception could then be manually selected on/off in the options menu.
