Virtual data problem with Band Arithmetic
toggle
Hi all,

I'm trying to do a land cover classification by means of K-means clustering, based on Landsat 5 TM imagery. I first convert the DN values to reflectance with the Band Arithmetic tool. However, that's where the problems start. I can only create virtual files with the Band Arithmetic, because if I try to write the data, the Tool doesn't execute after clicking OK, nothing happens. When I do the K-means clustering afterwards, all the bands that I created in the meanwhile, such as the original bands, the radiance and the reflectance bands, are in the same product. Apparently, I cannot choose the input bands for the K-means clustering, although the reflectance bands are the only ones I want to use as input. I therefore put those into a new product. However, I can't execute the K-means clustering with this product, since it refers to the previously made virtual products. Even if I save the new product to BEAM-DIMAP format, I get an error with the K-means clustering. Is there any way around this problem, for example by selecting the right input bands?

Thanks,
Annekatrien

I tested your use case and did not encounter any problem:

1. I opened a Landsat 5 TM product in VISAT
2. I opened the Band Arithmetic dialog, unchecked the 'Virtual...' option, defined my expression and clicked the 'OK' button.
3. A new band appeared in the Products View.
4. I saved the product, which implied conversion into BEAM DIMAP (this step is not required).
5. I opened the K-means clustering, where I defined the source bands in the 'Processing Parameters' by selecting the applicable bands from the list.

For selecting the applicable bands use the mouse pointer and a modifier key. On my Mac it is the 'shift' key, for Windows it is 'ctrl'.
