transformation from MERIS N1 format to NetCDF
toggle
I am trying to transform MERIS data in N1 format to a NetCDF formatted file using the export utility in VISAT.
Both the Export Raster Data options NetCDF-CF and NetCDF4-CF have the same problem.
In the output file I cannot find the crs variable required by my software, i.e. I had expected to find:

int crs ;
crs:grid_mapping_name = "latitude_longitude";
crs:longitude_of_prime_meridian = 0.0 ;
crs:semi_major_axis = 6378137.0 ;
crs:inverse_flattening = 298.257223563 ;

Can someone help me?

Hello Gerard,

yes it is missing. It is specified in the convention as an optional attribute. Probably that's the reason why we don't write it.
However, I agree with you. It would be useful to the user if we would write it.

I've created an issue for this:
[BEAM-1624] Gridd mapping attribute is not stored in NetCDF-CF files

Dear Marco

Yes it would be very useful if the crs attribute would be written to the NetCDF file.
Can you inform me when an updated version of BEAM might be available?

Hello Marco

I do not understand why the CRS attribute is optional,
My assumption was that the NetCDF files are self explaining.
If the CRS attribute is missing, how can one "guess" the coordinate system and its parameters?
Is this information stored somewhere else in a MERIS N1 file?

Yes you are right. Those values should be given, otherwise you don't know the CRS on which the coordinates are defined.
For MERIS N1, this information is also not given in the file. It is only in the product specification defined.

A new version of BEAM is planned for this month, or early next month. But I can not promise that this feature will be implemented till then.

Dear Marco

Can you provide an update on the CRS issue.
Are you aware of a BEAM release including the CRS feature?

Dear Gerard,

(I am answering in Marco's place as he is on his well-deserved holidays). Unfortunately, there has been no update yet to this issue.
Anyway, NetCDF support will be completely enhanced for one of the upcoming releases of the Sentinel Toolbox, which builds upon BEAM and consequently will well continue to support MERIS data.

Cheers,
Thomas

Dear Thomas

I have downloaded some new Sentinel 1A data.
It seems that BEAM does not handle the coordinate information correctly.
See attached screen dump.
It seems there are two packages, i.e. BEAM and the Sentinel Toolbox.
Is the Sentinel Toolbox going to replace BEAM and is BEAM no longer updated?

Hi Gerard,

it is true that the Sentinel Toolbox will be the successor of BEAM. However, BEAM will be further maintained and will get little updates and bug fixes but the main development of new features will take place in the Sentinel Toolbox.

Kind Regards
Marco

Dear Marco

Last year a new version of the NASA developed SeaDAS package was released.
I was told this version 7 was the result of a collaboration with the developers of BEAM.
Does the move from BEAM to the Sentinel Toolbox imply that for (major) updates of BEAM
I have to wait for NASA and that I should ask NASA to fix bugs or add functionality to BEAM?

Kind regards, Gerard

We haven't yet planned/discussed with the NASA how the further procedure will be. But I think they will also make use of the Sentinel Toolbox at any time next year. You can report your issues where you like. We can delegate the issues to the NASA or they delegate them to us.

Cheers
Marco
