Within the framework of the European Commission's Marie-Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways programme (IAPPl) running under the Seventh Framework, People Programme, Brockmann Consult GmbH is presently seeking a highly motivated

Computer Scientist (m/f)

with a minimum of four years experience

The applicant will work in the area of

Development of web applications for the visualisation, processing, analysis and archiving of environmental satellite data

to work on the WaterS project (Strategic partnerships for improved basin-scale water quality parameter retrieval from optical signatures).

Who we are

Brockmann Consult GmbH (BC) is a dynamic company specialising in Environmental Informatics and Geoinformation Services. The company is situated in Geesthacht, close to the city of Hamburg in Germany.

The candidate

The position requires several years of experience in professional Java programming and development of web-based applications and services. The applicant should routinely utilise design patterns, refactorings and unit level testing. Her/his openness, imagination, thirst for knowledge and pleasure in agile teamwork are of the highest value to us. Our projects request a good understanding of natural scientific/mathematic contexts, fluency in spoken and written English and the ability to create appealing technical documentation.

During his/her initial months he/she will be trained at BC in the BEAM API and in the development of BEAM scientific processors. The possibility also exists that the candidate may get the chance to be seconded to the WaterS project partners in Northern Europe (max. 3 months).

The candidate should have:

  • Academic education in Natural/Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics
  • Good knowledge of object oriented design and Java EE
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Skills to realize scientific ideas in software solutions
  • Experience in development of algorithms (methodology) for environmental data processing, preferable with remote sensing data
  • Interests and a knowledge of environmental topics, ideally in coastal and water remote sensing
  • Knowledge of OGC web services would be desirable

The regulations of the IAPP require that the candidate:

  • May not have German nationality
  • May not have been working in Germany for more than 12 months during the past 3 years
  • Possess a Doctoral Degree or having a min. of 4 years research experience after obtaining degree which formally allows embarking on a doctorate.

Your ability to work in a small and motivated team is seen as being very important. You will work in close cooperation with national and international scientists and you should have an eagerness to learn new subjects and to find solutions to complex problems.

The position is offered initially for the duration of 2 years, with the possibility of changing this to a permanent position.
